Anabolism and catabolism:

To better understand the difficulties encountered by sportspeople who wish to develop their muscle mass it is necessary to understand the different mechanics of anabolism and catabolism. Anabolism consists precisely of an amplification of muscle mass through increasing muscular fibre with exercise.

But these exercises make an excessive demand on our energy resources which the body may not be able to meet due to insufficient food intake or fat reserves and this can cause a disintegration of muscle tissue in order to produce the required energy. This is what is called ‘catabolism’.  This phenomenon occurs more frequently than one might think and is experienced by many people who practise sport.
